RunCore's always offered fast SSDs, but we're not so sure its new 2.5-inch ProCore IV drives offer the right mix of price, performance, and storage for the target market -- sure, they're fast, with up to 240MBps reads and 185MBps writes, but they're also expensive, starting at $179 for 32GB and quickly ramping up to $599 for 128GB and a whopping $999 for 256GB. That's a lot of scratch for the average laptop customer, and while the speed gains may be obvious, we're not so sure the storage tradeoff seems worth it. That said, RunCore's made it pretty easy to swap one of these puppies in: each drive includes a USB enclosure and cloning software that'll have you up and running at high speed in a jiff.

Navigon withdraws from GPS business in North America

Man, talk about coming straight out of left field. After blowing it out at CeBIT just two months ago, Navigon has just announced its intentions to pull out of the navigation business here in North America. According to CEO Egon Minar: "Due to the difficult economic environment and the aggressive pricing we have decided to withdraw from the PND business in North America for the time being. We are however not closing down our Chicago office which will continue to serve our automotive and mobile phone businesses in North America." He did assert that the company would "continue to fulfill all obligations to its existing PND customers in terms of map updates, etc.," but nothing else on the subject was said. So long, Navigon -- we'll miss your "uber-premium" wares.

BlackBerry Curve 83XX overtakes iPhone 3G in US smartphone rankings

The handset might've been surpassed in functionality and looks by its Curve 8900 successor, but nothing's got an edge on the BlackBerry Curve 83XX series in smartphone sales. According to NPD, the handset overtook the erstwhile champ iPhone 3G in the category for the first quarter of 2009, while BlackBerry's own Storm and Pearl handsets took the third and fourth slots, with the T-Mobile G1 rounding out the ranks in fifth place. Overall the smartphone market has grown from 17 percent of handset sales in Q1 2008 to 23 percent in Q1 2009. Compared to the previous quarter, RIM's gained a whopping 15 percent share of the US market -- owning nearly half of the entire scene -- while Apple and Palm both dropped 10 percent as they prep for their heroic mid-year launches.

RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8900 officially hitting AT&T in "early summer"

Ah, ha! So the rumors were true. Just a day after we heard that RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8900 would be making its way from T-Mobile over to AT&T comes this -- official confirmation from the carrier itself. Loaded with WiFi, GPS and a 480 x 360 resolution display, this 'Berry includes free AT&T WiFi at over 20,000 hotspots (with an unlimited data plan, ironically enough) and a 3.2 megapixel camera. There's also a microSD / SDHC slot that supports cards up to 16GB in size, and while AT&T's not being very forthcoming with pricing (as in, there's no word given at all), loyal customers can expect it to land sometime in "early summer." In other words, all this release has done is extinguish the rumor fires -- 'preciate it, Ma Bell.

Samsung's 850 PAVV plasma teases the 1-inch thick mark

The plasma industry may be teetering on the edge of certain doom (okay, so maybe that's exaggerating it... a little), but Samsung's still pushing the envelope. Over in South Korea, the company just outed its latest PDPs, the 850 PAVV lineup. Aside from being 40 percent more power efficient, 20 percent lighter and 120 percent more seductive than the prior generation, the new 50- and 58-inch sets also boast DLNA support, a USB 2.0 socket, DivX compatibility and a rather striking stand. The real kicker? The 29 millimeter depth, which equates to just over one inch thick for those who abhor the metric system. There's no word on when these beauties will hit the streets, but we're guessing Panasonic will be keenly interested in knowing.

MSI readying 14-inch X-Slim X400 laptop

Ruh roh -- looks like MSI's about to pull an ASUS. While the introduction of a few good X-Slim laptops is find and dandy, we're already starting to lose count of 'em. Aside from the X320, X340 and X600, the outfit is apparently readying a 14-inch variant that will be tagged X400. The news was outed at a company event over in Japan this weekend, and while details outside of the diagonal screen size were short, we can probably expect it to hum along on a CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) chipset and be just as sexy as its more diminutive counterparts. If we were betting folks, we'd probably expect an official specifications sheet to hit just in time for Computex.

Entrants of the 11th running of the Gumball 3000 started their cross-country rally Friday afternoon, cheered on by hundreds of fans as the cars began their journey at the Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles. Judging from the selection of vehicles, supercars were most definitely the rides of choice this year. There were a pair of Bugatti Veyrons, a handful of Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLRs, a Jaguar XJ220, SSC Ultimate Aero, Audi R8, and dozens of your standard Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins. Of course, there were also a few non-standard rides, like this bio-diesel Land Rover, a metallic-green lowrider, and this bad boy.

That's a Good Sport: Ford offers sport package on European Fiesta

After having driven Ford's latest Fiesta both in Europe and in North America, we came away duly impressed. The only tangible thing we longed for was a more sport-oriented chassis. And while we may have to wait a little longer to receive the diminutive hatchback on this side of the Atlantic altogether, at least European customers have received what we wished for.

While sport packages offered on competing products tend to be little more than cosmetics, the new Sport trim level on the Ford Fiesta incorporates a tighter suspension, dropped by 9 milimeters. Visually the Sport model is distinguished by a different grille, ground effects package (including front and rear aprons, side skirts and diffuser), 16" wheels and darkened headlamps. Among the bundled options found inside the cabin are leather-wrapped sports steering wheel and shifter, plus the key inclusion of an ESP Off switch for more spirited, less restricted driving. The package is available to European customers with either of three engines: the 96hp 1.4-liter four, 120hp 1.6-liter four or 90hp 1.6-liter turbodiesel. And while that may not amount to a proper ST or RS hot hatch, it's not a bad start.

Vauxhall sans Opel could reallign with GM Daewoo, Holden

Eyebrows raised at reports that General Motors could hold on to its British subsidiary Vauxhall even if - or, more likely, when - its German counterpart Opel would leave the family. With the model ranges of the two European GM divisions intertwined, a Vauxhall without Opel would seem like an empty shell. New reports suggest, however, that instead of re-plastering Opels with the griffin badge, the British marque could instead continue operations under GM ownership by importing products made by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology.

The restructuring of Vauxhall would also likely call for greater cooperation with GM Daewoo's neighbor to the south, Holden, which otherwise stands to lose significant revenues from the disintegration of GM's global operations, with Vauxhall and Pontiac having accounted for nearly half the production of its VE Commodore, sold in the UK as the Vauxhall VXR8 and in the United States as the Pontiac G8. Holden, for its part, also recently replaced many of its Opel-based products with rebadged GM Daewoo models. In the likely absence of Opel, the General's assets in England, Australia and Korea would likely end up cooperating more closely. However with Daewoos already on the European market as Chevrolets, the realignment could effectively be the end of the bowtie in Europe.

The 2009 FIA GT Championship kicked off this weekend at England's stoic Silverstone circuit, and with it a number of new racing machines - including competition versions of the Nissan GT-R, Audi R8 and Ford GT - started their bid for the crown. YouTube helps man deliver baby

Well, it finally happened: someone used YouTube to help deliver a baby. Yup, a man in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Cornwall, to be exact) used the video-sharing site to help deliver his wife’s fourth child, a boy named Gabriel. (A nice, biblical name!) Yes, this is a crazy world we live in.

So the guy, one Marc Stephens, a 28-year-old Royal Navy engineer (not pictured: this is John and Kate Plus 8), began his YouTube hunt at around 10:30 pm, when his wife first started noticing that, um, something’s going on here. A few minutes go by, “how to deliver a baby” later, and bam! Newfound info.

Several hours later, young Gabriel starts his escape. Stephens, armed with his YouTube knowledge, delivers the baby, then goes off to hospital to make sure all is A-Ok.

And here I use YouTube to find hidden items in video games!

Also, this story totally reminds me of a video we saw in 10th grade biology. I think it was called “The Miracle of Life,” and the baby just sorta… just sorta shoots out of there.

Skeptical hat: why not rush over to hospital as soon as your wife starts saying, “Honey, I think he’s making a break for it.”? (I should write dreadful sitcoms.)

Ottumwa, Iowa makes push for video game hall of fame

The 26,000-person city of Ottumwa, Iowa claims to be the “Video Game Capital of the World” and is making a big push to become the location of the video game hall of fame.

According to the Des Moines Register:

The proposed venue will showcase 35 years of video game history, host world-record contests and, city leaders hope, put Ottumwa on the map.

The southeast Iowa city of 26,000 is best known as actor Tom Arnold’s hometown.

“We have produced some great folks like Tom Arnold, but the more we can do to brand our community and bring in visitors who will spend money here, the greater of a place it will be,” said Terry McNitt, who heads the Ottumwa Area Chamber of Commerce.

If you’ve seen the King of Kong documentary, you may remember Ottumwa as the site of the Twin Galaxies arcade where in 1982, Billy Mitchell set a world-record high score on Donkey Kong during the Video Game World Championship. The event received national TV coverage and put Ottumwa on the map as it pertains to video gaming.

Walter Day owned the Twin Galaxies arcade and became the official scorekeeper for video game world records. Needless to say, he’s very much in favor of the proposed hall of fame.

Ottumwa’s video game hall of fame will be like a walk through time, Day said. Visitors will get to pop quarters into old-school Pac-Man arcade machines or try out more sophisticated games, such as Deadspace, on XBox.

“You would be able to go for world records,” said Day, who owns Twin Galaxies, the official scorekeeper of video games. “This will become a very, very big vacation destination.”

Researchers develop technique to unscramble light for a much sharper picture
